The Legacy
Our Family History
Don Millerd’s grandfather arrived in British Columbia from Ireland in the late 1800s with little more than the clothes on his back. Within two decades, he had built an extraordinary presence along the coast, owning more than 65 canneries, many of which began as simple hand-built bunkhouses powered by determined, hard-working people. As the industry evolved from sail and steam to modern engines, so too did the Millerd approach - adapting, innovating, and continually pushing the boundaries of what was possible in salmon processing.

This legacy is captured in the documentary Through the Gate: The Great Northern Cannery Story by CBC filmmaker Gary Prendergast, which tells the story of the vibrant, multi-ethnic community that formed around the Great Northern Cannery where Don and his siblings were raised. Long before it became part of present-day West Vancouver, this village reflected Francis Millerd’s forward-thinking vision: a place where people from diverse cultures and First Nations lived and worked side by side, building both an industry and a community.
